Brunello di Montalcino is a world-class Italian fine wine produced in the vineyards surrounding the medieval hill town of Montalcino in the southern part of Tuscany. It may look as a wine easy to understand as it has a relative short history (its birth was only in the late 1800s) and is made from only one grape – Sangiovese (locally known as Brunello meaning the “little dark one”). In fact, it is the only DOP wines in Italy that are required to be 100% Sangiovese. However, due to the complicated geology history of Montalcino, the soils in this area are particularly complex and diverse. Although there are no official sub-zones in Montalcino, it has been long acknowledged that from specific areas located in the north, south of and around the town of Montalcino, Sangiovese does express itself differently.
In this 2.5-hour masterclass led by our renowned Italian wine educator and super Brunello lover – Justin Chen, we will have an in-depth exploration of the sub-zones of Montalcino and taste 21 (we broke our record again!) great Brunello di Montalcino wines, which are all made by prestigious producers (including Baricci, Biondi Santi, Canalicchio – Franco Pacenti, Col d’Orcia, Fuligni, Il Colle, Lisini, Mastrojanni, Il Paradiso di Frassina, Il Paradiso di Manfredi, IL Poggione, Podere Le Ripi, Le Potazzine, Renieri, SanLorenzo and Il Valentiano) and in a wide range of styles reflecting their respective terroirs. This event will offer Italian wine lovers and wine students a fantastic opportunity to understand the terroir, quality and style of Brunelle di Montalcino DOCG and certainly, you won’t often have such opportunity to taste all these great bottles (which usually have a high price tag) at the same time. DON’T MISS!
