Italian Wine Masterclass Series 2023: Ferrari Trento – The Official Toast of Formula 1
Over a century ago, young winemaker Giulio Ferrari introduced sparkling wine to Italy, through the genius observation that the French Champagne region and Trentino in northern Italy bore vast similarities. These days, the Ferrari Trento winery is being run by the third generation of the Lunelli family, and is widely regarded as the leading metodo classico (traditional/Champagne method) sparkling wine producer in Italy. Hugely popular, their top cuvée, Guilio Ferrari Riserva del Fondatore, stands out as one of the best sparkling wines not only in Italy but also worldwide.
Ferrari Trento has been named the official toast of Formula 1®, and will bring Italian style to one of the most iconic podiums in the world of sport, from 2021 to 2024. For this, Ferrari is releasing a special limited-edition wine, dubbed the Ferrari F1® Podium Jeroboam.
Thanks to great support from the winery and their official importer in Hong Kong, EMW Fine Wines, Justin Chen (VIA Italian Wine Ambassador and Educator), and Champagne and sparkling wine specialist, Susanna Poon (guest speaker), will be leading a two-hour masterclass. Participants will have the opportunity to learn the history, terroir, wine-making and wine styles of TrentoDoc, the DOC in Trentino dedicated exclusively to traditional-method sparkling wine. You’ll also learn about the winery in particular, and taste a comprehensive line-up of five high quality metodo classico sparkling wines produced by Ferrari Trento— including the very precious Guilio Ferrari Riserva del Fondatore 2009.
Last but not least, we are very excited to have Mr. Marcello Lunelli—Vice President of Ferrari Trento—to join the class via Zoom and provide first-hand, valuable insights, plus interact with the audience!

Ferrari Trento
The Ferrari Trento winery was founded over 100 years ago in the alpine region of Trentino, northern Italy. It began with a man, Giulio Ferrari, and his dream of creating a wine in Trentino capable of competing with the best French Champagnes. Giulio was a young oenologist. In 1902, during his study trip to France identified the similarity between Champagne and Trentino regions and decided to make sparkling wines in Trentino. He is the first one to bring Chardonnay to Trento and spread over Italy. Now run by the third generation of the Lunelli family, Ferrari Trento is widely regarded as the leading metodo classico (traditional/Champagne method) sparkling wine producer in Italy.
Official Toast of Formula 1®
For three years – starting with the 2021 season – the Italian sparkling wine par excellence will celebrate the victories of the great champions of Formula 1®, with a Jeroboam of Ferrari Trentodoc on the most iconic podiums in the world of sport. Formula 1® has chosen Ferrari Trento as its official partner not only because it is one of the world’s most award-winning wineries, but also due to its long and prestigious history. In the words of Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1®: “Celebrating success is part and parcel of both our DNAs and Ferrari Trento, which has always been present at the most important moments in sport, is the ideal partner for us. For more than a century Ferrari Trento has been synonymous with Italian excellence: it has created, thanks to its passion and skill, sparkling wines of great elegance that have the ability to enhance any occasion”.
