French Wine Scholar (FWS)

The French Wine Scholar® education program is the most advanced, comprehensive, and up-to-date French wine course available. The syllabus takes a regional approach and discusses all French wine appellations and the factors that shape their identities.

From North to South, the FWS goes through every regions in France:

  • Alsace

  • Rhône
  • Corsica

This course will include 18-20 hours of classroom instruction with tutored tasting taught by approved instructor and the following:

  • The full-color French Wine Scholar study manual
  • 1-year access to the French Wine Scholar online study program for class preparation and review
  • Registration for the French Wine Scholar exam
  • Be part of student community
  • Certificate and the title French Wine Scholar after passing the examination.

In order to bring each region to life, you will also taste a total of over 50 different wines over the course of the program.

Pre-requisites?

No pre-requisites, but strongly recommend that students have completed WSET Level 2 Award in Wines, Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) or Court of Master Sommelier’s Introductory Sommelier Certificate (Level 1).

Examination
90 minutes
100 multiple-choice questions
75% passing grade
Students with a composite score of 85-90.5 pass with HONORS. Candidates scoring 91-100 pass with HIGHEST HONORS.

Philip Wong
Philip is an accountant turned wine specialist. The attributes of an accountant reinforce him to look for evidence in each wine he tasted that expresses its origin and reflects the underlying culture, climate, soil, winemaking practice and beyond. His passion lies in wines from all around the world. Having attained DipWSET, Philip was also awarded the Wine Australia Prize for the Asia-Pacific region. As an MWM Wine School Educator, he has been organising tasting workshops with a focus on Australian, Canadian and Japanese wines and a speaker at numerous local and international wine fairs and events. He has his own wine blog and contributes articles to newspapers and wine magazines regularly. He is also as a wine and management consultant to various restaurants in Hong Kong.
