An evening of hairy crab and superb wine pairings at Gold Garden Shanghai Cusine, hosted by Séverine Schlumberger, owner of Domaine Schlumberger.
In collaboration with our senior educator Justin Chen – originated from Shanghai – this event celebrates the harmony of Alsace wines with the delicate flavors of Hu Cuisine.
Séverine Schlumberger
Born in Alsace, Séverine Schlumberger grew up immersed in the world of wine on her family’s estate. With three brothers, she mastered both viticulture and standing her ground. Her parents encouraged careers beyond winemaking, so Séverine pursued law in Strasbourg. But after a few years, she realized life was too short for paperwork.
In a bold move, she relocated to England with two suitcases and no English skills. She quickly adapted to the restaurant world, managing a venue for four years and honing skills in diplomacy and chaos management. Yet, the vines called her back. In 2001, she returned to Guebwiller as her father retired. Though they were too similar to work side by side, Séverine found her place in the domaine. Her youngest brother later joined, completing the family team.
Now, Séverine drives the domaine’s export sales and communications, championing Alsace’s exceptional wines. In 2011, she welcomed twins, Basile and Clémence—her most rewarding “vintage” yet. Balancing motherhood and her role as the domaine’s dynamic force, Séverine continues her mission to put Alsace wines in the global spotlight.
Justin Chen
Justin is a wine educator at MWM Wine School in Hong Kong. He founded Joy Palate Wine Academy in 2014 and had been the wine educator and wine consultant between Hong Kong and Guangzhou for the academy previously.Justin has a wide range of wine-related qualifications, including DipWSET, WSET Certified Educator, Vinitaly International Academy (VIA) Italian Wine Ambassador & Certified Italian Wine Educator, Wine Scholar Guild (WSG) Italian Wine Scholar (Highest Honors) & Approved Instructor, WSG Spainish Wine Scholar & Approved Instructor, Knight of Truffle and Wine of Alba, and was awarded a Runner-up at the Hong Kong International Top Tasters Competition by The Drinks Business in 2016.
